New York, NY – Members of Youth Civil Service joined global leaders and activists at the United Nations Headquarters on June 7, 2024, for a hybrid celebration of World Oceans Day, under the compelling theme "Awaken New Depths." This annual event, co-hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations and the non-profit organization Oceanic Global, focused on transformative approaches to ocean conservation.
The theme "Awaken New Depths" emphasizes the urgent need to reevaluate our relationship with the ocean. Despite the ocean's critical role in producing at least 50% of the planet's oxygen and being a home to the majority of Earth's biodiversity, it faces unprecedented threats. With significant reductions in big fish populations and coral reefs, the urgency for a collective action to restore and revitalize the ocean's health has never been more critical.

During the event, Youth Civil Service members engaged in discussions and activities that highlighted the ocean's role as the lungs of our planet, providing essential food, medicine, and being a vital part of the biosphere. The event aimed to educate attendees on the impacts of human actions on the ocean and to mobilize a global movement for its sustainable management.
The World Oceans Day event served as a platform not only to celebrate the ocean's value but also to illuminate how combined efforts can ensure its health and sustainability for future generations. Youth Civil Service members left the event inspired by discussions with decision-makers, scientists, and activists, all advocating for a balanced relationship with our oceans.
